now, we're counting down to tonight's presidential debate. mitt romney's motorcade just pulled up at the debate hall. president obama's expected to arrive in denver any minute as well. we'll be talking with top supporters of each candidate. the former new york city mayor rudy giuliani, he'll join us live this hour. also we'll be hearing from both candidates' wives in special cnn interviews. today, by the way, is the obama's 20th wedding anniversary. so what's it like spending the night with the romneys? i'm wolf blitzer, you're in "the situation room." >>> 34 days from the presidential election but much more importantly right now at least right now we've reached what may be the most decisive night of the 2012 campaign, the first presidential debate at the university of denver. after weeks of downplaying expectations, mitt romney's campaign insiders are finally opening up about what they really think can be accomplished tonight. cnn's national political correspondent jim acosta is in denver getting ready to set the scene. jim. >> reporter: wolf, the romney campaign sees the polls m
presidential. i believe it's all about mitt romney. we know the president's skills at debating and talking. he's better off with a teleprompter but he's still a glib guy with a lot of substance. but what we don't know is how good mitt is. he was good against primary opponents. but this is the president of the united states and he has to make his case effectively without being too strident and basically presidential. bill: you said voters have to say maybe. >> today the election would be won by obama in a close election. but we have to shift voters to say i'll give this guy another look. i'm not going to cast my vote tomorrow. i'll look at other two debates and move forward. if he doesn't do well tonight. many of these absentee ballots will be cast and it may be too late to turn around. bill: the viewership actually went higher as the debates went along in debate number two and three. what is a win for president obama on that stage? >> that he comes off with people saying the same thing about him. i have got to give the guy a break, he inherited tough times. he has not been a bad president. he'
tonight in their first presidential debate. it will take place at this hockey arena in denver. romney has spent the past few days in the mile high city preparing for tonight. he took a break yesterday for lunch at chipotle. the president has been preparing in nevada. he visited the hoover dam. both campaigns now how crucial tonight's debate is. >> i think it's an opportunity for governor romney to flush out these issues face to face with president obama and there's no opportunity for the obama campaign to twist his message or his past words. >> he's very good at explaining what's going on, what he's proposing, what he has done. and i don't think there's anything to worry about. >> president obama and mitt romney will face off in two more debates, the next one is a week from tomorrow in danville, kentucky. president obama may be ahead in the polls in mean swing states, but nationally, the race for president remains extremely tight. the president leads mitt romney by 3% among likely voters. the poll's margin of error is 3.1%. so that puts the race in a virtual tie. the president led his rep

. it is a reminder that we've never seen governor romney in a one-on-one presidential debate and it's been four years since president obama had that experience against john mccain. so they're making sure everybody will be comfortable in the hall. the candidates do their own walk-throughs tomorrow to get comfortable with thatstage. but they're doing their final debate preps and the campaign staffs are conducting their pre-debate ritual, wolffe. >> and as they go through this, they actually do, you know, actual 90-minute or so q&a sessions, real debates, they got people pretending to be others, but they actually work through what's going on. >> reporter: they do. and both of the candidates have said that they're being grilled pretty hard in these debate sessions. senator john kerry, democrat of massachusetts, he's standing in for governor romney. senator rob portman, republican of ohio who's done this for years on the republican side, he's standing in for president obama. and both president obama and romney say they're getting roughed up. the president took a break, he had a campaign event out in nevad
and counting until the presidential debate tonight. mitt romney, he is gaining in two swing states. could this be romney's springboard? romney has whittled the president's lead, take a look. he's whittled the president's lead in the two percentage points in virginia. this is according to a poll released today by marist college, the wall street journal and also nbc news. two-point lead for obama, that's down five points last month. keep in mind we're talking virginia, that's 13 electoral votes there. and check it out, similar story for you in florida. 29 electoral votes there. now, a one-point, one-point lead for obama, down from four points in september. we should mention here that poll shows the president still with the seven-point lead in ohio. we can't forget about ohio. but speaking nationwide here, the president's lead, in our cnn poll of polls, you can see it here, stands at 3 percentage points, unchanged. as we noticed today, kind of interesting, the president has gained one point and romney dropped one point. this is the gallup national tracking poll. obama with a six-point lead t

the presidential election. but is it really a swing state? is it closer than it looks as mitt romney is suggesting predicting today as you just heard in jim acosta's report that he will win pennsylvania? our senior political analyst, ron brownstein is here with us in "the situation room." he's the editor of "the national journal." is pennsylvania realistically possible for mitt romney? the polls show right now a ten-point gap between these two men. >> it will be a very different race if pennsylvania is really in play. the fact it's not in play though is kind of instructive. right now president obama seems safely ahead in all of the polling. pennsylvania is actually the kind of state that mitt romney's promise a year ago he was going to be able to put into play the same way john mccain's promise was supposedly that. the reason why pennsylvania has become so solid democratic they've won in each of the past five elections is largely because theuburbs outsi philadelphia, white collar, affluent, right of center economically, left of center social issues have moved decisively towards the democrats. orig
ryan, the vice presidential nominee, has actually helped romney's efforts to win the white house or wound up hurting romney's efforts to win the white house. where do you see it? >> well, i've been a big alarmist on the ryan question from the beginning. i thought it was a mistake to choose him. i thought it was a mistake even before choosing him to bolt this campaign to the ryan plan. the romney campaign needs to be about jobs and growth. the decision to make this campaign about medicare and medicaid which is what you do when you adopt the ryan plan much less put ryan on the ticket is a big mistake. i think the campaign is really suffering for it. >> you think democrats down ballot as they say, senatorial candidates, congressional candidates, are happy, donna, that paul ryan is on the ticket with romney? >> absolutely. he gives definition to what the republicans actually stand for. i mean, basically they want to, you know, create another system for medicare. and as president obama and the vice president today spoke out also about social security. so democrats are along the ryan b
